Prom Night ’Ryden’ Ch.17

BEWARE: Band slash, don’t like it? Please don’t read then!!

“Hello?” A dry, female voice answered the phone. This confused Brendon to no end.

“Uh, is Ryan, there?” As soon as he realized what he said, he mentally kicked himself for being rude as to not even mutter a greeting.

“No, he’s out with his father. Can I take a message?” Before replying, Brendon took a couple of seconds to be awe-struck. He supposed the female voice to be Ryan’s mother, but Ryan’s parents never seemed to be the types who were caring. Then another thought struck him; Ryan was out with his father? Why didn’t he have his cell phone with him? He started to panic before blurting out absentmindedly.

“Erm, is this his mother?”

“Yes, who is this?”

“His bo- friend, I’m his friend.” Brendon rethought what he was going to say, he didn’t know if Ryan’s mother knew about him, but he supposed not.

“A friend, okay. I suppose it’s good Ryan has a friend.” She seemed to be lost in her own world for a moment, as if nostalgia crept upon her and the thought of her son having a friend being the most interesting thing she’s heard in a while.

“Uhm, would you mind if I asked where he went with his…er father?” Brendon inquired, rather awkwardly. He didn’t want to come off as rude but the last word that left his mouth seemed to hang in the air as if his father’s death being self-proclaimed made the reality a thousand times more painful.

“I don’t know, he just told him not to bring anything on a little trip they were going to take.” She responded a little cruelly, as if wondering why she was telling this to a complete stranger that might not even be Ryan’s friend. Brendon immediately began to worry, he didn’t trust Ryan’s father after all the things he had done to him. He wondered how Ryan could have.

“Doesn’t that worry you, after the things he does to him?” Brendon inquired aloud, anxiety striking his voice, not making him sound any less rude.

“What are you talking about?”

“You know what I mean.” He said rather sternly.

“George has his moments, but he loves us.”

“But if he loves you he’d stop.”

“He tries.”

“Apparently, it doesn’t work.”

“Apparently!”  Brendon felt bad for striking such a conversation with Ryan’s mother because it obviously made the woman even more distraught and she probably didn’t need that in her life right now. Especially not from a complete stranger anyway.  But there was something tugging at his heartstrings and he felt that he needed to know why Ryan was so neglected. Because maybe if he knew, he could help him.

“I guess you must be close to Ryan, if you know.”

“Yeah.”

“Please, don’t tell, George is changing, he’s getting better.”

“I haven’t told so far, don’t worry. May I ask why?”

“After his father abandoned him when he was a teenager, he turned to alcohol. Since then it’s been his solution to every problem.” Lillian responded, a little reluctantly though. She didn’t know why she was telling this to someone she didn’t even know, but somehow something inside her needed to be released, and she felt that strangers listen best. Besides this boy was close to Ryan, he must be important. Ryan never let anyone into his life, not even his own parents.

“Oh, I…I apologize, Ms. Ross. I didn’t mean to pry, I just…”

“It’s okay, I understand, I’d be the same way. You must really care about him, don’t you?” Brendon blushed at that remark.

“You do too.” And with that Brendon hung up the phone, but he felt good afterwards. He just lay in his bed for a couple of minutes, having a feeling that Ryan would be okay, his danger senses weren’t tingling and from what he heard Ryan’s father couldn’t have been that bad. It was just how he carried himself, but sometimes the people who carry themselves in the finest ways are the most broken. Now nostalgia flooded Brendon and his father engulfed his mind, it was like he was in a trance. Everything he thought about suddenly turned out to have some sort of relation to his dad, would he ever be able to snap out of it?

His thoughts were soon interrupted by a vibration of a phone, and sure enough Ryan was calling. Brendon immediately answered.

“Ryan?”

“Brendon?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m sorry I didn’t answer earlier, my mom told me you called. She says you guys talked.”

“Oh, yeah…uhh where were you?”

“The most amazing thing happened Brendon, it was like a miracle.” Ryan couldn’t suppress his enthusiasm.

“What, what happened?”

“Well to make a long story short, my dad got home from his trial. He told me to grab my coat and shoes and that we were going on a trip. He said we needed to talk. So he basically drove me to our old fishing spot. The car ride was awkwardly silent but from small talk he told me that he is going to a rehab center soon, and he told me he was excited about it. He told me he’s always loved me and apologized for everything he did.”

“Oh wow, that’s great!” Brendon felt good for Ryan; he had never heard him so happy.

“There’s more though!”

“What?”

“I told him about us…and he says he wants to meet you as soon as possible. I said tomorrow would be okay…do you mind?”

Now that was a lot for Brendon to take in, but for Ryan’s father to be so accepting was a shocker and of course a giddy Brendon responded with an enthusiastic ‘Of course!’

“Did he say what made him, uh you know want to quit?”

“He said he always wanted to, but it was so much of an addiction that he became a slave to alcohol abuse. He realized that he was turning into his father, the exact opposite of what he wanted to be. He said he didn’t want to see me hurt anymore. He said he missed fishing for sardines. It’d been too long.”

Brendon tried to refrain from tearing up, he didn’t want to ruin Ryan’s great mood but his breath came in short gasps and soon Ryan did everything he could to calm him through a phone. The only response he ever got were loud gasps and Brendon wondered why his father never took him fishing.
Okay so here are a couple things I want to apologize for:

1: Taking so long to post this chapter.

2: Writing such a short, crappy chapter.

3: Not responding to everyone as soon as I should...

Hopefully the next chapter will be able to make up for it, and it's my personal fave out of any of them. If I titled my chapter it'd prolly be something like "Meet the Morman" Yes, Brendon meets Ryan's parents with a suprise ending of that chapter....that will lead into the actual prom night which will be the end that will take 2 chapters to complete!

I will also soon post the newest Ryden I am working on :)

Thanks for bearing with me!!
